A 9-year-old from West Caldwell brought home a gold medal from the USA Roller Sports Figure Skating National Championships held in Lincoln, Nebraska last month.
Gillian Muldoon won first place in the Elementary C Combined Figures & Loops event. Gillian has been skating competitively for two years with the Florham Park Figure Skating Club in Florham Park. This was her first trip to nationals.
Gillian skated the Elementary C loop elimination against 19 other skaters on July 26 and qualified to skate in the finals. The next day she skated the Elementary C figure elimination against 37 skaters and also qualified for that final.
Both finals took place on July 28. Although Gillian slipped out of medal contention in the finals, her scores were high enough to secure a win in the combined.
Gillian?s team member, Elinor Dowd of Blairstown, secured a gold medal in Juvenile/Elementary B girls freestyle.
Her sister,?Michaela, 14, also traveled to Nebraska to compete at nationals in July.
Gillian is coached by Scott Bartell in compulsory figures, an event where skaters trace a series of circles painted on the skating surface combining a variety of difficult take offs, edges and turns. Bartell works with Gillian several times a week on her figures & loops. Elinor is coached by Kristen Taylor in Freestyle. Taylor and Dowd also work several times a week on jumps, spins, footwork and complicated choreography.
New Jersey is part of the Eastern Region of USA Roller Sports, which includes Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.?
