Story of the Year: Sam Houston football

Sam Houston High School's future was in danger when San Antonio Independent School District proposals suggested shutting down the low-performing school in 2009.

That same year, a group of football players were just finishing up their freshman year. Their coach, Gary Green, hoped that group could bring some pride back to the East Side.

Sam Houston had 21 varsity players with the team for the entire 2011 football season. Fourteen of them were seniors. Nine are headed to junior college or four-year college programs.

The nine Hurricanes: Javonte Magee (Baylor), Leo Thomas (Arizona), Ralphael Green (Indiana), Gary Reed IV (Incarnate Word), Jhurell Jackson (Blinn Junior College), Maurice Djeto (Sul Ross for track), Prince Eshan, JeQuan McBride and Melvin Ross (all with Cisco Junior College).

?We wanted a state championship,? Gary Green said. ?But in the grand scheme, this means a lot more.?
