Google buys about 1,000 IBM patents (AP)

NEW YORK ? Google Inc. has bought about 1,000 pending and issued patents from IBM Corp. in its quest to shore up its defenses against suits by other technology companies, according to documents filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Google and IBM spokesmen wouldn't comment Friday on the purchase.

The patent transfers were recorded two weeks ago and cover a range of technologies, many of which have little to do with Google's Internet search and advertising business. One covers ways of automatically adjusting a clock, another deals with surface treatments for electrical contacts.

But even patents that have little do with Google's business can be useful ammunition in the hyper-litigious technology world.

If it's sued over patents by a company whose business relies on technologies covered by Google's patents, Google can file a retaliatory lawsuit.

Phone makers that use Google Inc.'s Android software are being sued by Apple Inc. and Microsoft Corp. As a young company, Google has few patents of its own to counter with.

Kent Walker, Google's general counsel, wrote in a blog post in April that the explosion in patent litigation threatens to stifle innovation.

"But as things stand today, one of a company's best defenses against this kind of litigation is (ironically) to have a formidable patent portfolio, as this helps maintain your freedom to develop new products and services," Walker wrote.

Earlier this month, Google participated in an auction for a collection of 6,000 patents from Nortel, a bankrupt Canadian maker of telecommunications equipment. It was outbid by a consortium including Apple that paid $4.5 billion.

In the past year, Google has also bought patents from Verizon Communications Inc. and Motorola Inc.

The patent sale was first reported by the blog SEO by the Sea, which follows Google.

I haven't said it before but I'll say it now: it's raining babies! Not literally, of course, but babies are coming at us from everywhere. I'm certain this just generally happens after a period of time, when all of the family members of two households become of marrying age. It's inevitable and it's wonderful. Children are everywhere. Maternity wear is everywhere I look and growing belly's are expanding to fill them. It's a wonderful time to be alive. Not only are we expecting our second child but my sister-in-law is expecting as well. As we've finally returned back near our hometowns, but our sister-in-law hasn't, it became apparent that a short trip they made back home would require a baby shower. How better to show our love for a new member of the family then to shower their parents with bottle-themed streamers, cover them in primary colored cookies, and prepare them for the first few years with the many sizes of clothing their little one will doubtless need, grow out of, rinse, wash, repeat.

I wish I could say I was invited, but I wasn't. Neither was or son. It was a strictly "women only" affair, with nursing children allowed. So we made a day of it. Guess what we did while everyone else was doing baby things? We read books with fewer than five words per page! We colored with crayons on construction paper of various colors! We played with a ball! We walked up the stairs like big boys without holding the handrail! We found any objects we could and practiced drumming on any other objects we could find! We listened to children's music and ROCKED OUT! Oh yeah! Beat that, Baby shower! I'm willing to bet we had way more fun than anyone else did. (We did, however, miss Mommy.)

Some NASA workers launch new careers in energy | Business ...

HOUSTON ? some of the several thousand former NASA contractors being put out of work by the termination of the space shuttle program are finding a soft landing in Houston?s vast energy sector.

After a couple of lean years, local energy companies are hiring again ? and many like what they see in the large and highly skilled pool of jettisoned space workers.

Among companies that have hired or are recruiting former NASA contractors are major oil producers, oil field services providers, chemical makers and firms that build large-scale energy projects.

They?ve snapped up engineers and other technical experts once again in high demand as high oil prices and improving economic conditions worldwide give the industry a boost, even as other sectors take longer to rebound.

But it?s unclear how many of the laid-off workers have been hired so far, and how many jobs will be waiting for hundreds of others who will be let go after Space Shuttle Atlantis lands for the last time today.

There are also questions about how easily work experience on the nation?s space program will transfer to the oil field or chemical plant. Aerospace engineers, for instance, may know how to get a crew safely to the International Space Station but very little about how oil and gas reservoirs behave.

Several local energy companies said given the caliber of most former NASA contractors, they are willing to take the chance.

?You can always find room for people with these skill sets,? said Teresa Wong, spokeswoman for oil field services giant Baker Hughes, which so far has hired two ex-NASA workers and continues recruiting among their ranks.

The shuttle program is shutting down after 30 years and 135 flights, taking thousands of jobs with it. at Johnson Space Center in Houston, about 2,000 contractors have been let go since last fall and another 2,000 will be cut by September, said Rachel Kraft, a center spokeswoman. more jobs are being lost in Florida and Alabama.

Even if energy companies are interested, the job search is tough.

Keely Hartsfield, a quality assurance engineer with more than 20 years of experience who lost her job at Johnson Space Center on Oct. 1, said the downsizing was a blow. ?I?ve never been laid off in my life,? she said as she combed through online job listings at the Aerospace Transition Center, a small storefront in a strip mall in Clear Lake that helps ex-contractors find work.

She believes there is more employment opportunity in Houston than in many other large cities, but said the search has been more difficult than she expected.

The Aerospace Transition Center has been working to revise job searchers? r?sum?s to highlight broad skills over shuttle-specific projects and jargon. It holds workshops to teach interviewing skills and provides tips on using social media sites such as Facebook for networking. And it hosts job fairs, including an online version taking place this week and next.

Director Veronica Reyes said the center has helped set up more than 300 interviews so far, but did not know how many have led to jobs. She said energy companies have been among the more active recruiters.

Dow Chemical hired 19 former NASA workers, mostly engineers and technicians, at its massive manufacturing complex in Freeport, said Undrea Kennedy, human resources manager. Recruiting will continue as the site adds up to 150 new positions this year, she said.

Engineering and construction colossus Bechtel Corp. of San Francisco has hired for its oil, gas and chemicals unit in Houston and expects to pursue more NASA veterans as it adds another 135 local positions over the next three months, company spokeswoman Michelle Allen said.

Canadian pipeline operator Enbridge has hired one former NASA contractor, interviewed many more, and expects to make offers soon to a few candidates, said Marcie Freiley, recruiting lead in the company?s Houston office.

BP said it is reviewing r?sum?s from several hundred former NASA candidates and setting up interviews, mostly in technical fields such as engineering.

Halliburton Co., one of the world?s largest oil field services firms, said it also is recruiting former NASA workers.

There's no mention of flash drive speed, however, though it's now clear that not all SSDs are created equal at Apple -- not only when it comes to capacity, but also performance. Jonathan over at TLD discovered a fairly significant discrepancy when benchmarking both MacBook Air models over the weekend. The 128GB Samsung SSD in his 11-inch Air was able to achieve 246 MB/s write and 264 MB/s read speeds. When he switched to the 13-inch model, however, speeds dropped to 156 MB/s and 208 MB/s, respectively, using that notebook's 128GB Toshiba SSD. We compared speeds on two generations of 13-inch models, and confirmed Jonathan's findings. During our tests, the 256GB Samsung drive in our older model achieved 214 MB/s write and 251 MB/s read speeds, while the 128GB Toshiba drive in the new MacBook Air scored 184 MB/s and 203 MB/s during write and read tests, respectively. Overall, you're not likely to notice a significant difference during normal usage, though it's certainly an interesting find, nonetheless.

1. Red meat is higher in saturated fat than fish or chicken (without the skin). If you must eat red meat, choose lean cuts and remove the fat. Grill or barbeque without additional fat or just a spray of olive oil. Grill or poach fish and chicken.

2. Use a low fat spread rather than butter or margarine and choose other low fat dairy products such as yoghurt and skimmed milk.

3. Avoid cakes and other baked foods which can be high in fat.

4. Do eat wholemeal bread and use brown rice and pasta.

5. If you have to fry food, use olive oil, rapeseed oil, corn oil or vegetable oil rather than butter or lard.

6. Do eat your five portions a day of fresh fruit and vegetables.

7. Use plenty of garlic as it is said to have cholesterol lowering properties.

Lowering cholesterol with diet is not too difficult, but don?t forget to include regular exercise in your new lifestyle. If you possibly can, give up smoking and keep alcohol intake to a minimum. Don?t forget to check your cholesterol level after three months. Bernanke: Regulators moving on risky bank rules (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says regulators are moving to complete rules on how they would handle banks they deem to pose a threat to the financial system, in an effort to prevent another crisis.

Federal regulators expect to finalize some of the rules this summer, Bernanke says in testimony prepared for a Senate Banking Committee hearing Thursday, the law's first anniversary. Among other changes, the law empowers regulators to dismantle a bank or other financial firm and sell off the pieces if they determine that it poses a threat to the system.

The aim is to avoid the kinds of "too-big-to-fail" bailouts of financial institutions that cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars in the crisis that struck in 2008.

Ending "too-big-to-fail" requires allowing a big, interconnected financial firm to fail "if it cannot meet its obligations ? and to do so without inflicting serious damage on the broader financial system," Bernanke says in the testimony.
