Two Tales of Customer Service | Tanya Smith
Customer service applies wherever you do business ? not just offline, but online too. Some online entrepreneurs don?t get this point. To make this point, let?s look at two different customer service experiences I?ve had recently.
In one case, I bought a service to use with recording webinars online.? I tried out the service for a few months, then realized I wasn?t utilizing it enough to justify another monthly expense since my classes had slowed down.? Instead I decided to look for a lower cost service or just use a teleconference line for awhile.? Here is what happened:
- I went to the Help area to find out how to cancel;
- There was an FAQ that clearly outlined how to close the account, along with a link;
- When I clicked the link, the next page said something like ?Thank you for your business. We?re sorry to see you go!? So we can continue to provide the best support, we?d love to hear if there is anything we can do better.?
- I could choose from a quick set of options, or enter my own reason into a blank area;
Within a few days, I received a follow-up call from a company representative saying if I wanted to come back, here?s how to do it and they would be happy to let me use the service FREE for 30 more days while I confirmed for sure that I wanted to do.
I stayed.
Not only that?I renewed my account at the end of the 30 days.
In stark contrast, here is what happened with another service.? I was really enjoying this online guru?s delivery on a web show, so I decided to invest in a monthly membership program to receive his materials.? After the first package arrived (since they sent a CD and newsletter by postal mail), I was unimpressed with the content?amongst other things.
So I looked for a way to cancel.
- ?I looked on the website?no information, so I looked in the newsletter?there was a mailing address, no phone number, but there was a support email
- I wrote the support email?it came back with an error message saying ?address unknown?;
- I then went back to the website thinking ? ?surely, there must be a way to get in touch with these guys to close this, to ask a question, something??nope;
- So I find myself doing a Google search to find them and finally figure out an email address;
After I send an email asking about closing the account, that?s where it really gets interesting.? It took 12 days for me to get a response.? In that time, I sent a 2nd?then a 3rd email, hoping to close the account before they charged me again for membership.? When I finally get a reply?? The person on the other end tells me to go to a page and print out a form that has to be mailed?really???
I was charged a 3rd time by the time they cancelled my account.
Think I would ever go back? Not even if they have the greatest programs in the world.? I won?t ever invest another dime with that service.
I think many of us see customer service as a given ? it?s a part of the thread of our business.? It is something we value for ourselves.? But we have to remember to implement it in our own businesses as online entrepreneurs?from the beginning to the end.
After all, there is much more at risk these days in the age of the internet where reputations rise and fall quickly at the click of a 140 character note.

Of course, your accounting may differ from your competitor?s or even your neighbors, that does not matter so much. ?What matters is that you keep an eye on the accounting you have, digest it and gain a better picture of where your business has been and where you are going. ?This is why your accounting is so important.
I always tell my clients that one of the trusted advisors they should have on their team is an accountant, this is obviously to keep their accounting in check. ?The accountant is in addition to their business attorney and their commercial insurance broker. ?With a?minimum?of these three trusted advisors, your small business should be well on its way to success.

Rising gasoline prices are likely to make business and leisure travelers alter their travel plans this summer, a survey to be released today by the U.S. Travel Association finds.
More than half, 54%, of leisure travelers who planned to travel by car say higher fuel prices would affect their plans. A smaller percentage, 26.8%, of business travelers would reconsider their plans.
It would take an increase of at least 26 cents to $1.25 a gallon for travelers to alter their behavior. According to the survey of 2,500 adults conducted March 8-11, 57% would change their plans if prices rose that much.
The nationwide average for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.90 on Monday, according to AAA. That?s up 6 cents from a week ago and 32 cents from a year ago.
Leisure travelers who planned on driving were more likely to cancel their trips because of higher gas prices. Almost half, 44%, say they?d take fewer trips this summer. If they did end up hitting the road, higher gas prices would fuel cutbacks, with 43.9% saying they?d shop less and 37.4% spending less on restaurants. More than a third say they?d drive shorter distances.
Only about one-fifth of business travelers planning to drive would take fewer trips because of higher fuel costs. But they, too, would change their behavior on the road: 27.7% say they?d spend less at restaurants, 22.3% would spend less on lodging, and 19.8% would spend less on shopping.
?When travelers go to destinations, their positive impact in that area, that city, that state isn?t just the fact that they?re there, but that they?re spending money,? says David Huether, senior vice president of research for USTA. ?The destinations and places where vacationers are going to be traveling to this year are going to see less economic activity.?
Roger Dow, the association?s president, says the travel industry will respond by offering incentives such as gas cards and multiple-night deals at hotels. ?The industry is going to be very proactive,? he says. ?We?ve been there before. We?ll certainly weather this thing, but it bodes well for consumers to be able to find deals and extra value.?
Higher airfares, also being driven by higher oil prices, would affect leisure travelers more than business travelers, the survey found. Among leisure travelers who plan to fly, 43% would alter their plans if airfares increased, compared with one-quarter of business travelers.
Leisure travelers would respond by seeking out a cheaper airfare (39%), flying less (27.4%) or spending less money on entertainment (27.2%). Another 10% would ditch plans to fly and find another way to travel.
Business travelers would employ similar tactics to offset higher airfares, but not to the same extent. About one-third would search for a cheaper airfare, 22% would spend less on entertainment, and 20.2% would fly less. And 6% would switch to other modes of transportation.
Still, Dow says, business travelers will have to become more efficient with their travel by planning ahead, shortening their trips or filling their schedules with as many appointments as possible on the road. ?The business traveler has been under a tremendous amount of pressure with the economy already,? he says.

The report entitled "Dos and don'ts for butterflies of the Habitats Directive of the European Union" was published in the form of an "Applied Conservation" paper in the newly launched open-access journal Nature Conservation (press release on the journal launch). It includes detailed accounts of each species, their habitat requirements and food-plants, as well as a list of dos and don'ts in the management of their habitats.
European butterflies are under huge threat and almost 10% are now threatened with extinction. The European grassland indicator shows that the abundance of 17 characteristic butterflies has declined by over 70% in the last 15 years.
The main reasons for the declines are habitat loss and incorrect management. Many habitats are now either abandoned from agriculture, allowing them to become overgrown with scrub, while others are too intensively managed. The new publication is thus a pivotal step to get remaining habitats better managed.
Butterflies are sensitive indicators of the environment and populations respond very quickly to habitat change.
Management for butterflies will help ensure the survival of a wide range of other insects, which form the bedrock of European biodiversity.
The guidelines will help ensure that European habitats are managed in a sustainable way that helps the survival of humans as well as wildlife.
The lead author, Chris van Swaay of Dutch Butterfly Conservation said "Managing habitats in the correct way is the single most important issue affecting the survival of European butterflies. This is the first time that practical information has been brought together to address the issue. We hope the advice will be taken up urgently across Europe to help save these beautiful species from extinction."
Klaus Henle of UFZ (Germany) who established the new journal in collaboration with Pensoft Publishers (Bulgaria) within the European Union's FP7 project SCALES says "Biodiversity loss is one of the most important topics facing the future of our planet. Our new open access journal Nature Conservation is intended to make scientific information freely available to help conserve nature and create a healthy world for everyone. The journal aims particularly at facilitating better interaction between scientists and practitioners and its major goal is to support synergistic interactions among scientists, policy-makers, and managers."

The report entitled "Dos and don'ts for butterflies of the Habitats Directive of the European Union" was published in the form of an "Applied Conservation" paper in the newly launched open-access journal Nature Conservation (press release on the journal launch). It includes detailed accounts of each species, their habitat requirements and food-plants, as well as a list of dos and don'ts in the management of their habitats.
European butterflies are under huge threat and almost 10% are now threatened with extinction. The European grassland indicator shows that the abundance of 17 characteristic butterflies has declined by over 70% in the last 15 years.
The main reasons for the declines are habitat loss and incorrect management. Many habitats are now either abandoned from agriculture, allowing them to become overgrown with scrub, while others are too intensively managed. The new publication is thus a pivotal step to get remaining habitats better managed.
Butterflies are sensitive indicators of the environment and populations respond very quickly to habitat change.
Management for butterflies will help ensure the survival of a wide range of other insects, which form the bedrock of European biodiversity.
The guidelines will help ensure that European habitats are managed in a sustainable way that helps the survival of humans as well as wildlife.
The lead author, Chris van Swaay of Dutch Butterfly Conservation said "Managing habitats in the correct way is the single most important issue affecting the survival of European butterflies. This is the first time that practical information has been brought together to address the issue. We hope the advice will be taken up urgently across Europe to help save these beautiful species from extinction."
Klaus Henle of UFZ (Germany) who established the new journal in collaboration with Pensoft Publishers (Bulgaria) within the European Union's FP7 project SCALES says "Biodiversity loss is one of the most important topics facing the future of our planet. Our new open access journal Nature Conservation is intended to make scientific information freely available to help conserve nature and create a healthy world for everyone. The journal aims particularly at facilitating better interaction between scientists and practitioners and its major goal is to support synergistic interactions among scientists, policy-makers, and managers."

Is your sales team killing your business? Seems counterintuitive, but sadly it is more common that you think. There are many ways they can kill your business in the exploding-train-derailment sort of way, but most of you know how to prevent those. What you are probably missing are these three ways your sales team is killing you slowly:
- Saying Yes to Every Deal: Raise your hand if you think your sales team?s job is to go out and get every piece of business that they can find. Now those of you raising your hand please take that hand and smack yourself. Your sales team?s job is to go out and get the right business for you to complete. It is just as much a function of their job to protect you and your business from bad deals as it is to close good ones. Don?t be afraid to say no to a deal that is going to be more harm than it?s worth.
- Lowering Your Prices: As a sales manager or business owner have you ever had a salesman come in and say ?We can win this deal, but only if we drop our price to ?.?? Remember that hand you raised earlier and smacked yourself with? Hit them with it next time they ask this. I?m guessing you had a pretty good idea of what you thought your value proposition was when you sent them out into the wild to sell for you. Lowering your prices is a great way to bleed off margin, make for additional stress for everyone in accounting, and kill any chance you have of making the right money on this customer or any referrals they send. More importantly, the first time you lower the price it will feel really bad, you?ll think about it for a while, and then ultimately decide it?s the right play. But the second time it?s not so hard, and it gets progressively easier until without even realizing it you?ve lowered your bar entirely.
- The Client is Always Right: Yup, the tried and true mantra of customer service will kill you. I?m all for pleasing and delighting the customer as much as the next guy, but if you?ve failed at one or both of the above things, my guess is you?ve got clients in the pool who are demanding more of your time or product for less return, holding you hostage for payments because they want ?one more thing?, or generally making your life hell because they?re never quite happy. Remember that clients are made just like you and I, human and imperfect. They?ll be wrong just as often as you, and while you shouldn?t go pointing out all of their flaws, you should be willing to draw a line in the sand when you have to. Sometimes you just have the better position to fight from.
No go forth and diagnose these problems within your organization and make the changes to prevent them from leading to a slow painful death.

Supreme Court lets stand ruling that sides with transgender inmates
A Wisconsin law barring state funding for hormone treatments or sex-change operations for transgender prisoners was struck down, a ruling upheld on appeal. The Supreme Court declined the case.?
The US Supreme Court declined Monday to take up a case examining whether transgender prison inmates enjoy a constitutional right to government-funded sex change operations and hormone therapy.

Concerned about the use of state funding for ongoing hormone treatments that help certain male inmates look more female, lawmakers in Wisconsin passed the Inmate Sex Change Prevention Act. The law barred the use of any state funds for hormone treatments and/or sexual reassignment surgery.
Three Wisconsin inmates filed a class-action lawsuit. After a trial a federal judge struck down the 2006 law as a violation of the Eighth Amendment?s ban on cruel and unusual punishment. A panel of the Chicago-based Seventh US Circuit Court of Appeals agreed.
The appeals court noted that the Eighth Amendment requires state governments to provide medically-necessary treatment to inmates in their prison populations.
Prior to passage of the Inmate Sex Change Prevention Act, medical personnel in the Wisconsin prison system had determined that hormone therapy was medically necessary for the three inmates. As a consequence of the new law, this treatment was discontinued.
The appeals court did not rule that prison officials are required to provide hormone therapy or sex change operations, only that such treatments must be available to inmates if the prison?s own medical personnel determine they are medically necessary.
?Surely, had the Wisconsin legislature passed a law that [Department of Corrections] inmates with cancer must be treated only with therapy and pain killers, this court would have no trouble concluding that the law was unconstitutional,? the Seventh Circuit said. ?Refusing to provide effective treatment for a serious medical condition serves no valid penological purpose and amounts to torture,? the appeals court said.
Prison officials had expressed concern that providing hormone treatments that would help certain inmates in an all-male prison appear physically more like a woman might make that inmate a more likely target for sexual assault in prison. Men who receive female hormone treatments develop breasts and experience a redistribution of body fat.
The appeals court dismissed that concern, noting that transgender inmates already face a substantial risk of such assaults.
In her brief to the court, Assistant Wisconsin Attorney General Jody Schmelzer had asked the high court to determine whether the Eighth Amendment requires state prisons to treat ?gender identity disorder? (GID) with hormone therapy.

March 27, 1964: The Great Alaskan Earthquake
?One day earthquake and thunder decided to explore the world, but doing so they reached only a desolate and dry plateau. Earthquake begun to shake, stronger and stronger, until the earth finally collapsed and the sea inundated the land. Earthquake was satisfied ?From here, they will obtain what they need to live, where prairie has become water?. This is what brings to the people life.? Thunder acknowledged what earthquake had done ?It is true. So they will survive!? and so they went further north and together they lowered the land and created the western coast.?
The creation of the world according to a legend of the Yurok people (Cascade Range)
In the late afternoon of March 27, 1964 Alaska was shaken for five minutes by one of the strongest earthquakes ever to be recorded in modern times, with a magnitude of 8.3 ? 9.2 after Richter (the earthquake was so strong that no seismometer in the affected area recorded it correctly).
The earthquake displaced almost the entire southern coast of Alaska along the Prince William Sound, some areas were raised by 9 meters (30 feet) above the sea level, other level dropped below sea level and became inundated later by the sea (maybe the Yurok myth is based on the observation of such a similar environmental change after an earthquake in prehistoric times along the western coast of the U.S.).

The earthquake caused heavy damage on 75% of buildings and infrastructure in the affected area, most in the city of Anchorage, 131 people were killed.
Large fissures opened in the ground when the groundwater liquefied the soil and more than 2.000 landslides and avalanches occurred across south-central Alaska. Buildings in Seattle (Washington) begun to swing by the approaching seismic wave and the ground was measurable deformed even in Florida.

In some lakes in Alaska the movement of the water catapulted chunks of ice onto the land, causing damage on the surrounding trees up to 9 meters (30 feet) above ground. Unusual water movements, attributed cautiously to the earthquake, were observed in South Dakota and apparently even in Puerto Rico and Australia.
Most remarkable was the generated tsunami, waves higher than usual were observed even along the Japanese coast. The seaport of Valdez was destroyed by a 30 meter high tsunami, 32 people died there. For hours after the earthquake the sea was tumultuous and in the evening with the high tide the reflected waves of the first tsunami inundated the surviving area of the city of Valdez.
Six hours after the earthquake the tsunami reached the island of Vancouver, one hour later the coast of Oregon and the wave caused damage even in Crescent City and Los Angeles (California).

Many of these phenomena were studied for the very first time by scientists ? only two hours after the earthquake the first geologists arrived to Anchorage.

HONG KONG (Reuters) - An election committee of about 1,200 Hong Kong notables picked Beijing-loyalist Leung Chun-ying as the city's next leader on Sunday, after a fraught campaign which will intensify pressure on China to keeps its promise to allow Hong Kong a direct leadership election in 2017.
Hong Kong, a former British colony that returned to Chinese rule in 1997, is a freewheeling capitalist hub which enjoys a high degree of autonomy and freedom, but Beijing's Communist Party leaders have resisted public pressure for full democracy.
The city's seven million people have no say in who becomes their chief executive, a selection process which was marked by uncommonly high levels of public discontent at perceived interference by China.
Several dozen protesters inside the voting venue erupted in jeers and stood on chairs as the result was announced.
"We want direct elections immediately," they chanted.
Outside, up to 2,000 protesters, some of whom had camped out overnight, yelled slogans and waved banners to show their anger at being denied a voice. "Leung Chun-ying resign, Leung Chun-ying resign," they yelled.
Many spun colorful little flying discs into the air to symbolize a need to fling off such "small circle" polls.
Speaking after his win, the leader-elect who takes over from bow tie-wearing Donald Tsang, said he would work to ensure this is the last time an elite committee votes for a Hong Kong leader, pledging his commitment to direct elections in five years.
"I shall work with the whole of Hong Kong in the next five years to make sure that the 2017 universal suffrage chief executive election will work well."
Leung said he faced a daunting task, but added that he wanted to ease tensions while reaffirming the rule of law, human rights and freedoms.
"During the heat of the campaign, inevitably, passions were roused and strong remarks made," said Leung, showing little visible emotion after his win.
"Now that the contest is over, it is time to reunite, we must work in unison to be inclusive ... and once again instill positive energy into our community," Leung told reporters even as protesters tried to shout him down from outside the room.
"HEAVY INFLUENCE" RESENTED
Compared with previous chief executive elections in which a Beijing-backed frontrunner coasted into office, this one was marked by scandal and mud-slinging between the two main candidates.
It also brought into the spotlight the influence China's Communist Party leaders have over Hong Kong politics.
Henry Tang, the scion of a wealthy industrialist and a former head of the civil service, was widely seen early on as the Beijing-backed candidate, but his image was damaged by revelations of a love affair and a scandal over illegal construction at a family-owned villa.
That appeared to be enough to convince China to switch its allegiance to Leung, and lobby election committee members for votes. "Somehow Tang has managed to blow a fixed election," said a Western diplomat in Hong Kong, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Leung, 57, has been dogged by accusations of being a Communist Party member, which he denies.
He is a Hong Kong-born surveyor with deep Chinese connections and a reputation as a tough political operator with a more innovative policy vision, including building cheaper public housing.
Many dismayed residents demanded a fresh election with new candidates. Underlining their frustration, most of more than 200,000 people surveyed said they would abstain if given the chance to vote, according to a University of Hong Kong poll.
"This is the most blatant interference by Beijing into the domestic affairs of Hong Kong ... causing damage to the one country, two systems policy," said Democratic Party chairman Albert Ho, who also stood for election but won only 76 votes.
Hong Kong was promised a high degree of autonomy when it returned to Chinese rule in 1997 under a "one country, two systems" formula with a promise of full democracy as an "ultimate aim".
Though that has not been achieved, it remains a beacon of democratic reform and civil liberties in China, which wants to see the self-ruled island of Taiwan reunited with the mainland, perhaps under a similar formula.
The election committee, filled with business professionals, tycoons and Beijing loyalists, selected Leung with 689 of 1,132 votes cast as successor to the bow tie-wearing Donald Tsang, who cannot stand again.
Tang, Leung's main rival, got 285 votes.
"For this election, everyone feels the influence of Beijing is very heavy," said political analyst Johnny Lau, speaking inside the harbor-front convention centre where the vote was held. "(Leung) has created an aura of being a Chinese emperor that will make it more difficult to lead politically."
"This election has caused great divisions. His ability to gather public support will be quite weak because these frustrations have accumulated over many years," Lau added.
