Is Raw Dog Food Harmful to Your Pet? | FamilyA-Z.blogspot.com

A lot of people are going to raw dog food from the processed and dry dog food that they have been using for pet food for a long time. Raw dog food is a much more natural diet for your pet and very healthy. It usually comes frozen and may be in either pellets or patties. If you are thinking about this type of diet here are some things that you should know.

Many people are nervous about giving their pet a new type of diet like this, but in actuality what you are doing is returning your dogs diet to something that they ate for centuries. Before dogs were domesticated, they lived in the wild and killed other animals for food, and even though they have gotten used to a dry or wet food diet, they will adjust to it rather quickly.

As long as you feed your dog the raw food that comes from your local pet store, or from a manufacturer that knows what they are doing, feeding your dog raw pet food is perfectly safe and even healthy. However, there are a few things that you should be aware of if you are going to switch to this type of diet for your pet.

The first thing that you should understand is exactly what to feed your dog. Pets should be eating raw food that is biologically appropriate. This basically means that the best food for dogs are the food that they previously ate when they were in the wild: meaty bone and vegetable scraps. The raw pet food that they sell commercially is perfect.

The main thing that most pet owners are concerned with is that the diet that they are feeding their pets is grain free. Dog food with grain is thought to make it harder for your dog to digest its food properly, and a grain free diet can result in everything from a more shiny, healthier coat, reduction in weight for obese dogs and a decrease in allergic reactions.

You can find raw food in many different pet stores, especially in the larger ones like Petco and PetSmart. Normally, smaller pet stores won't have a freezer section where this type of dog food is stored, although some will. You will find them in patties or pellets.

To avoid any complications that you may not be aware of, especially if your dog has any preexisting conditions, you should talk to your veterinarian before starting a raw food diet. Of course, you should talk to your vet before starting any diet program for your pet.

Also, to prevent any illness, you should try to take it one step at a time when switching your pet to raw dog food, because sometimes illness can occur, since the dog isn't used to eating this type of food.
