A new sports activator will soon be seen at schools around the Clutha district.

Warepa School principal Sue Adcock, who co-ordinates the 20 schools involved in the South and West Otago areas, said she was pleased to name Mitch McRae as the new sports activator.

The sports activator is employed by a cluster of schools in the Clutha district to deliver 12 sessions annually to each class.

The programme is an initiative of Sport Otago and funded by Sparc and Sport Otago.

Mrs Adcock said Mr McRae was a talented sportsman, who would bring many skills to the position.

Mr McRae (24) begins his new role on Monday.

He has been involved in a wide range of sports, including basketball, cycling, triathlon, rugby, athletics, swimming, cricket, tennis, squash, and surf life-saving.

"He is a top-level triathlete and is attempting to qualify for the New Zealand team to compete at the world champs in Auckland," Mrs Adcock said.

Mr McRae was also a member of the Otago Nuggets basketball team from 2008 to 2010.

Originally from Oamaru, he has a bachelor of physical education degree and has worked as North Otago Basketball's development officer and administrator.

Mr McRae said he was "really excited" about the opportunity to come to the Clutha district.

"I'm looking forward to working with all schools involved in the sports activator programme," he said.

"It will be great to use the new Cross Recreation Centre too," he said.

Mr McRae fills the vacancy created by Penny Batchelor, who now manages the $5 million Cross Recreation Centre.
