THE HORRORS & THE DESIGNS

I figure to give this roleplaying buddy stuff a try, seeing as how things have become a bit stagnant with my writing as of late, and I'm looking for something to juice me up again. Some people call me Mek, short for Mekhet, as in Mekhet being a particular clan of vampires in World of Darkness, if you know about that. Or feel free to call me by my OOC name, Andrew. A little bit about me, no? I'm turning 22 in a couple months, and I'm in my senior year of college, majoring in Biological Sciences. I live in the Eastern Time Zone, and now that I've started back in school, I'd like something to keep my writing muses in tact, and perhaps even challenge the more taboo ideas of roleplaying. I'm a pretty laid back fellow, and there are times where I can't stop 'lol'ing everything that comes my way. I like to be humorous and maintain a lighthearted environment, not being the center of drama-induced tirades or head-scratching pleas for attention. Sorry, that stuff's just not cute.

First and foremost, if you're a real life roleplaying enthusiast, it's better if you turn away from this request. Unless I can convince you to try out supernatural genres, we probably won't work out. I find that real life gets a tad...boring, for me. After all, I already have my own life to broadcast and experience most of the themes you'd normally find in a real life setting, so I wouldn't care all that much to roleplay them. Now, with that said, I've mostly found my niche in supernatural-type roleplays. Not the show, mind you, but the show is very nice. I mean the broader sense of vampires, werewolves, angels, demons, that kind of modern-fantasy kind of stuff. It always draws in those darker impulses, and it's where my quality shines the most. There's also the sensual side of things, especially with the historically seductive nature of folklore vampires and demons that truly draws me in for some reason. I've also dabbled in futuristic and science fiction-like elements, stemming from my love of Mass Effect (totally adore that game). Before anything else, I'd like to say that I'm not interested in roleplaying any fandoms of any sort. Just preferring to stick to original characters and all that likeness. So, no Twilight, The Vampire Diaries, True Blood, none of that.

Now, for the fun stuff, haha. Generally, I tend to write somewhere between 700-1000 words, if that matters to any of you. And in a plot I'm really interested in, I can write much more to sate your need for something lengthy. I get the idea of quality-over-quantity, and if need be, I wouldn't mind supplying a sample of my writing. But I do have somewhat of a vain side that loves to see something lengthy, just not fluffed up to make it look long, if that makes any sense. I roleplay exclusively male, and many times, my plots will involve some sort of twisted romance, so a female roleplayer who roleplays female characters would be ideal as well. Personally, my favorite male playbys include Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Orlando Bloom, Andrew Stetson, Cam Gigandet, Johnny Depp, and Ben Barnes. For females, I love Karen Gillian, Adrianna Lima, Miranda Kerr, Miss Mosh, Olga Kurylenko, Evan Rachel Wood, and Olivia Wilde. I love to suggest female playbys for some to play, and male playbys for me to play, so it would be cool if you didn't mind using all kinds of playbys, ranging from models on Modelmayhem, and perhaps even pornstars if the roleplay called for some adult action. Yes, I'm unashamed of it, so this may detract you. Usually, I do male/female heterosexual pairings only, and I'll occasionally throw out a male/male homosexual pairing if it's intriguing.

I'm a self-admitted character manwhore, and I utterly love creating characters, from the twisted psychopath to the unadulterated womanizer, to the mysterious former slave. Anything you can think of, there's a solid chance that I've been able to play them in some capacity. Once, I had 23 characters on one site, and I'm definitely looking for some capacity to do even more than that. So I'd like to have someone who can keep up with my boundless supply of ideas, even if they become repetitive. Also, there are times where I like to throw multiple characters into one thread or plot idea, so someone who can roleplay a bit between their own characters before mine would work. Like, me having three or more characters in a thread, I can readily interact with them, so someone who can do the same would be utterly awesome.

Since this is a mature request, preferably, I'd like someone who is at least eighteen years of age. That's simply because much of my writing is of the darker, R-rated (and sometimes even X-rated and NSFW-stuff) variety, and it would be most comforting to know that the other person is over that age limit as well.

Smut and gore writing is very important to be, not just because I'm a pretty vulgar and kinky person, but it's also a facet of roleplaying that I enjoy writing, as well as exposing inner desires and such. So it's important to me that you're comfortable with just about any and all forms of the aforementioned, and not only that, but be enthusiastic about it as well. I'm looking for a challenge! Invigorate me with your deepest and darkest cavers of roleplaying, and I'll promise you that you will be handsomely rewarded with the same, and then some. There are some taboo things that I'd like to explore -- not necessarily incest, rape or that, although I wouldn't mind doing that as well -- but other things such as slavery, polygamy, polyandry, casual sexual encounters with multiple partners, those kinds of things. And combine that with a healthy dose of violence and graphic content, and I'll bleed out oodles of muse for you.

Most importantly, I want someone who's going to test me with detail and development, not necessarily plotting. No lie, I love plotting, and such, but a lot of people I've met don't like to go knee deep in those sexual, gory, and violent encounters without a plot that makes sense. I'll be the first to tell you that I'd like to do those things regardless of if there's a plot idea set. Instant smut? Yep. Starting off a thread with a woman already "on her knees"? Yep. Going into deep and bloody and senseless violence within the first three posts? Yessir. All of that. A lot of times, if I'm enjoying that, you'll find me easy to plot and develop even more nonsense and awesomeness from those simple starting points. I want someone who's gonna be as active as possible, who won't fall off the face of the earth. I understand that real life gets in the way, I won't bite your head off if you tell me what's up. I want a fairly good relationship where we can evolve a possible friendship, not just setting for roleplaying.

Now, this is strictly forum roleplaying, as I'm not all that interested in email or IM roleplays, any of that stuff. I lose interest in them too quickly for them to be considered as options, so if that's a dealbreaker, I'm sorry. And please don't peddle your sites toward me as well. I don't want to be just another member for your site. At the current moment, I would like someone who wouldn't mind tagging along with me on a few sites, especially the one I'm on. Or even helping me staff possible site ideas, since I do want to create my own place of horrors and delights to endeavor.

If you were able to read through all of that and not lose interest, then I applaud you! I sincerely hope that I'm not asking for much, but it would be really awesome for someone to fit that mold. You would surely make me a happy panda. =D If you have any questions or comments, feel free to PM me to respond here to see if we can get anything going, and if we do, I'll be more than glad to distribute my MSN, and if that's not suitable, I can get an AIM screenname as well if we really hit it off. Now, I'd like a well-thought out response, covering all the bases and such, what you're interested in, what drew you into my request, since I will always try to give as much thought into my own replies as well.

Hopefully I get a lot of responses. =D

Poland seeking 70 new military helicopters: PM

NATO-member Poland is in the market for 70 new military helicopters, more than double the number it first sought in March, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Wednesday.

"We're determined to speed up and expand our helicopter plans with the immediate decision to buy 70 helicopters for the Polish army," the PAP news agency quoted Tusk as saying.

Delivery of the first choppers is expected by 2014, he said, describing the cost of the project as "gigantic", but declining to name a figure.

In March, Warsaw announced a tender to buy 26 multipurpose helicopters for its army worth an estimated 1.5-3.0 billion zlotys (360-720 million euros, $480-960 million).

The move is seen as a significant step in the Polish army's drive to replace 250 Soviet-era helicopters in the years to come.

A former communist state of 38.2 million, among the first to join NATO in 1999 and member of the European Union since 2004, Poland has two helicopter plants, run by British-Italian AgustaWestland and the US Sikorsky Aircraft respectively.

Polish media have tipped them as the odds-on favourites in the tender.

AgustaWestland in 2010 bought Polish helicopter producer PZL Swidnik, which makes the Sokol helicopters used in rescue operations, by firefighters and for transport, and above all by the army.

It sells its helicopters in Poland, the Czech Republic and South Korea.

AgustaWestland plans to start producing AW 109, AW 119 and AW 139 helicopters in Swidnik in southern Poland, alongside parts for the AW 101 model.

Sikorsky has started to produce a new version of the Black Hawk S70i for export in the PZL Mielec plant, also in southern Poland

Tusk was on Wednesday visiting a military exercise range in Drawsko, northwest Poland, where Polish forces are currently staging their largest annual military exercise, code-named Anakonda 12.

He also announced that Poland's failed attempt to build its first naval corvette-type vessel -- a decade-old project dubbed Gawron and mired in allegations of high-level corruption -- will be salvaged by completing the craft as a patrol boat.

KENYA: Child killed in grenade attack on Kenyan church

A nine-year-old boy was killed and three other children wounded when a hand grenade was thrown into a Sunday school session in a church in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, police and medical staff said.

Kenya has suffered a series of grenade attacks since it sent troops across the border into Somalia last October in pursuit of Islamist al Shabaab militants who it blamed for kidnapping its security personnel and Western tourists.

The attack on the church came days after Kenyan troops launched a surprise offensive on the southern Somali port of Kismayu, the last stronghold of the al Shabaab, forcing the rebels to flee.

Police said attackers threw the grenade into the Sunday school service in St. Polycarp's church on Nairobi's Juja Road.

The grenade exploded, spraying the children with shrapnel and fatally injuring the boy.
"We suspect this blast might have been carried out by sympathisers of al Shabaab," said deputy police spokesman Charles Owino.

"These are the kicks of a dying horse since, of late, Kenyan police have arrested several suspects in connection with grenades," he added.

Masked assailants launched simultaneous gun and grenade raids on two churches in the northern town of Garissa in July, killing at least 17 people.

Radio Receivers

We own a used Grundig Yacht Boy 400 and recommend it highly. These were made in the 1990s, but are still ?state-of-the-art?. The CCI radio company sells a clone of this model today. Good used Grundigs can be found on ebay in the $50 to $100 range. The YB400 has some great features:

  • AM/FM and Shortwave bands
  • SSB receiver
  • Tuning Scan
  • 40 Channel Memory
  • Light
  • Alarm
  • Sleep Timer
  • Two Time Zones

We consider it the best AM portable receiver made. At night we can listen Coast to Coast A.M. on stations from Los Angeles CA, San Antonino TX, Omaha NE, or Denver CO and even Detroit MI and Chicago IL at times, all sounding clear from here in New Mexico.

Our Yacht Boy 400 receives from 55 Kilohertz through 30 Megahertz, covering the entire HF (high frequency) band. In a time of crisis, shortwave may be the only radio signal out there. It may come in real handy when we can?t depend on the Internet to know what is going on.

WWV is the international time standard hack that can be found on the following shortwave frequencies:

  • 2500 khz
  • 5000 khz
  • 10000 khz
  • 15000 khz
  • 20000 khz

WWV also allows you to check space weather as well as satellite environment (interference). We can use these frequencies to gauge the effect of solar activities on our radio communications. WWV has a very strong signal. For most it will be received as a strong S 8 to 10 signal strength. But in the event of adverse solar activities even these stations can become covered up with static and noise. So if you are trying to receive a certain station and are having difficulties, check WWV to see if their signal is coming though alright, or if it is covered up with static. In that case, the sun is most likely the cause of your problems or (an EMP blast).

?

Communications Radios

?Family Radio Service? (FRS) and ?Business Radio Service? (BRS) are the frequencies for the common walkie-talkies you see. They often say that they have an 8 mile range, however, most of these radios have a hard time transmitting further than 2 miles. Not everyone lives in a laboratory environment. The 8 mile range estimates take into account ?line of sight? factors only. If you can see the other party that you are trying to communicate with, you can talk to them. We don?t live in a flat world without a horizon and without trees, buildings, mountains, etc. Because of this, these radios are over rated and can only be used for close-up communications (typically less than 3 miles at best).

They certainly can be useful if your community uses them in a small area (40 acres or less).

The Business Radio Service does include base radios, which have more power than family radios. You can add an external antenna on a mast high above the ground to stretch their effectivity (up to 10 miles).

?

Scanners

The I-Com IC-R5 pocket scanner is a handy radio to own. These are available in US models and overseas models. The FCC gave the I-COM company a license to sell this receiver in the U.S. ONLY IF CERTAIN FREQUENCIES WERE BLOCKED OUT!

With this in mind the best place to buy one is on Ebay. There are sellers on ebay from other countries such as Japan who sell UNBLOCKED IC-R5?s and IC-R7?s. These ebay listings will be explicit. It will say it is a Japanese model and does not have any blocked frequencies. The IC-R5 can scan from 30 kilocycles to 1400 megahertz (1.4 Gigahertz). Within these frequencies are the following things you may find interesting to listen to.

For entertainment purposes only, here are some of the stations you can listen to that are hard to find frequencies:

To find local frequencies, check out http://www.radioreference.com/

Emergency Action Messages are the encoded radio traffic between NORAD and SAC with the nuclear bomber fleet, like in the movie?Fail Safe.

With Fusion Centers operating, the radio traffic is mostly digitized and scrambled. But you will notice that when they are ?working together? the scanner?s frequencies will all seem to light up at the same time. By this I mean you?ll notice you local sheriff/state police/ local cops/ FEMA/DHS/Border Patrol/FBI, etc., all going encrypted and all talking at the same time.

The Fusion Centers work with the local authorities, so when you hear this it usually means that there is a VIPER team closing down some road to perform unwarranted stops and searches under the guise of (take your pick) sobriety check points, looking for seatbelt terrorists, looking for insurance terrorists, etc.

If the local VIPERS are not encrypted, you will hear things like the officer waiting for a ?29 check?. This means they are checking to see if there are any outstanding warrants for that driver. When you hear this you will also hear things like ?we?re set up at mile maker __?. If you don?t want to have to claim your right under the 4th?amendment with these VIPER TERRORISTS, then stay away.

Suffice to say that if you hear a lot of cross agency traffic, it?s nearly a sure bet that a VIPER team is out making sure that the country is safe for their brand of freedom.

Creating a Radio Round Robin: With the right equipment a group of people could create a a ?radio round robin?. this is when a group of people has a specific place on the radio to meet on a regular basis. For example, let?s say there are 6 people in your round robin and you all decide to meet on Saturday mornings on CB channel 40, 27.405 Mhtz, LSB (lower side band) (or CW for RTTY ? look for an upcoming article on that!) and exchange news with each other. It?s not a question of ?IF? TPTB will shut the internet down it?s ?WHEN?? The purpose of these articles it to create awareness in becoming independent of the internet and become your own beacon of news by maintaining contact through the coming difficulties. Having a group of people from diverse places is also important. Then one of the round robin group can relay a message from one station who can?t be heard to a station that can? maintain contact with both stations.

Coming up in Part 3???More on RTTY,? Round Robins and Slow-Scan TV.

Owner of burned RI club donates land for memorial

WEST WARWICK, R.I. (AP) ? The owner of the site of a 2003 nightclub fire that killed 100 people is donating the land for a permanent memorial, bringing an end to a years-long effort to secure the site of The Station fire by families of those killed and survivors of the blaze.

Dan McKiernan, a lawyer for property owner Ray Villanova, filed papers at West Warwick Town Hall that transferred ownership of the plot of land to the Station Fire Memorial Foundation on Friday. The Associated Press reviewed the documents Friday morning. The move comes five months before the 10th anniversary of the blaze, which started when pyrotechnics for the rock band Great White set fire to flammable foam that lined the walls of the club.

The one condition of the transfer is that a suitable memorial be maintained at the site in perpetuity, according to the deed.

McKiernan would not comment about the donation ahead of a 10 a.m. news conference scheduled by the foundation at the site of the fire.

A makeshift memorial consisting of homemade crosses, flowers, photos and other personal items cropped up on the site shortly after the fire and has been maintained there by family members of the dead ever since. The site was left open to the public, and a memorial service is held there annually on the anniversary, Feb 20.

While the foundation has a design for a permanent memorial and pledges from construction workers to build it, nothing could move forward until it secured rights to the land.

In 2006, three people were criminally convicted of 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter: club owners Jeffrey and Michael Derderian and Great White tour manager Daniel Biechele. The hundreds of survivors and relatives of those killed struck a $176 million deal in 2009 with several companies to settle lawsuits brought over the fire. With the civil and criminal prosecutions over, attention turned to building the memorial.

Villanova has said he always intended the land be used as a memorial, an intention repeated by McKiernan as recently as last week. But delays have frustrated some family members of those killed. Last week, Gov. Lincoln Chafee and House Speaker Gordon Fox said they were looking into the legalities of seizing the land by eminent domain.

FDA warns about risks of online pharmacies

By Linda A. Johnson, The Associated Press

The Food and Drug Administration is warning U.S. consumers that the vast majority of Internet pharmacies are fraudulent and likely are selling counterfeit drugs that could harm them.

The agency on Friday launched a national campaign, called BeSafeRx, to alert the public to the danger, amid evidence that more people are shopping for their medicine online, looking for savings and convenience.

Instead, they're likely to get fake drugs that are contaminated, are past their expiration date or contain no active ingredient, the wrong amount of active ingredient or even toxic substances such as arsenic and rat poison. They could sicken or kill people, cause them to develop a resistance to their real medicine, cause new side effects or trigger harmful interactions with other medications being taken.

"Our goal is to increase awareness," FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg told The Associated Press, "not to scare people away from online pharmacies. We want them to use appropriate pharmacies."

That means pharmacies that are located in the U.S., are licensed by the pharmacy board in the patient's state and have a licensed pharmacist available to answer questions. In addition, the pharmacy must require a valid doctor's prescription for the medicine. Online drugstores that claim none is needed, or that the site's doctor can write a prescription after the customer answers some questions, are breaking the law.

Research by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, which represents the state pharmacy boards, found that of thousands of online pharmacies it reviewed, only about 3 percent follow state and federal laws. In fact, the group's website lists only a few dozen Internet pharmacies that it has verified are legitimate and following the rules.

Most consumers don't know that. An Internet survey, conducted by the FDA in May, questioned 6,090 adults. It found that nearly one in four Internet shoppers has bought prescription drugs online, and nearly three in 10 said they weren't confident they could do so safely.

The campaign comes after some high-profile cases of counterfeit drugs reaching American patients earlier this year.

In February and again in April, the FDA warned doctors and cancer clinics around the country that it had determined they had bought fake Avastin, a pricey injectable cancer medicine, from a "gray market" wholesaler. The fake Avastin vials originated in Asia or Eastern Europe and were transferred through a network of shady wholesalers before being sold to clinics by a wholesaler claiming to be in Montana.

In another case, the FDA issued a warning in May after learning consumers shopping on the Internet had bought fake versions of generic Adderall, a popular medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

No deaths or serious injuries have been linked to those fakes, but Hamburg notes that when drugs don't help patients get better, doctors usually blame the disease or assume a different medicine is needed. That means most fakes aren't detected.

So the FDA, which has put increasing focus on the counterfeiting problem, on Friday launched a website, www.FDA.gov/BeSafeRx , that shows consumers how to determine if an online pharmacy is safe.

"Buying prescription medicine from a fake online pharmacy can be dangerous, or even deadly," the site warns.

It includes tips on how to spot illegal pharmacies, links to state databases of licensed pharmacies and explanations of all the dangers of rogue pharmacies. Besides likely getting fake drugs, that includes the risk that they will infect your computer with viruses, sell your personal and financial information to other rogue websites and Internet scammers, or charge you for products you never ordered or received.

Many rogue pharmacies claim to be in Canada ? because Americans know medicines are cheaper there and assume that's why they're getting a deal. Many fraudulent sites even put the word Canada in their name, or display the Canadian flag prominently on the site. Their web storefronts are slick and look professional. And they all offer prices that are unbelievably low.

"If the low prices seem too good to be true, they probably are,' Hamburg said.

The FDA is collaborating with several other federal agencies and departments and even Interpol in the campaign, Hamburg said, and it has asked medical and pharmaceutical industry groups to join in.

It's also reaching out to doctors, pharmacists and medical facilities to spread the word. They'll get access to materials they can download, from patient fact sheets and discussion guides to sample blog items and web banners for a practice's own website. There's also a list of tips to help doctors determine if a patient may be buying medicine online.

The agency will do a follow-up survey to see if the campaign's message is reaching the public.

"What's truly important to us is that consumers know how to look for an online pharmacy that's legitimate and safe," Hamburg said.

Local man diagnosed with Lymphoma raises money ... - Cancer Kick

Since 1949 the Leukemia and Lymphoma society has raised more than $875,000,000 to fund research leading to treatment, and in the past 24 years that work has paid off with survival rates for blood cancer patients doubling and tripling and in some cases quadrupling.

But the work never ends. Just ask Phong La.

This is not how 26 year old Phong La expected to spend a gorgeous fall day. Accompanied by his sister, he?s meeting for the first time with Dr. Todd Doyle, a radiation oncologist who?ll map out his course of radiation treatment. That?s because Phong is recovering from lymphoma, diagnosed in March.

For two years Phong suffered knee pain. But it wasn?t until this past March he got a diagnosis -lymphoma.

?I didn?t even know what to say. I didn?t know what to think. I thought he was kidding with me. I mean, I?m 26 years old diagnosed with lymphoma in my knee,? said Phong.

Lymphoma usually affects the lymphatic system ? In rare cases it affects the soft tissue of the knee. Chemotherapy quickly followed.

?The radiation is a sort of insurance card to clean up any cancer cells that might have survived the chemo.

Despite his ordeal, Phong turned his attention to others.

With time on his hands during recovery, and encouraged by friends, he began fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Association. He blasted through his first goal of $5,000, well on his way to raising $10,000.

Phong was lucky. Shortly before his diagnosis a friend encouraged him to get health insurance. Without it, and help from his family, he?d be destitute. In fact, all the money friends donated to him, he?s put toward his fundraising goal.

You can help Phong reach his goal and join hundreds of others this Saturday at Siena College for Light the Night.

A big fundraiser sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m.

One-fifth of spine surgery patients develop PTSD symptoms

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Nearly 20 percent of people who underwent low back fusion surgery developed post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms associated with that surgery, according to a recent Oregon Health & Science University study published in the journal Spine.

Past studies have noted PTSD symptoms in some trauma, cancer and organ transplant patients. But this is the first study, its authors believe, to monitor for PTSD symptoms in patients undergoing an elective medical procedure.

"It is maybe not surprising that significant surgical interventions have psychological as well as physical impacts," said Robert Hart, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon, professor of orthopedics and rehabilitation at OHSU and senior author of the study. "I think it means that we in the medical community need to monitor for these effects in our patients and to manage them when they occur."

The study found that the strongest factor in determining whether a spine surgery patient suffered PTSD symptoms after the surgery was whether the patient had a psychiatric disturbance -- depression or anxiety disorders, for example -- before the surgery. But some patients who had no such pre-surgery diagnoses also suffered PTSD symptoms after the spine surgery, the study found.

The OHSU study involved 73 of Hart's surgical patients who underwent lumbar spinal fusion surgery, a procedure in which two or more lumbar vertebrae in the back are fused together, usually including implantation of metal screws and rods as part of the procedure.

Surgeons at the OHSU Spine Center always look for other ways to deal with back pain before surgery. But sometimes, surgery is the only option. And spinal fusion is often major surgery that may involve complications and often involves a long recuperation period. The majority of patients in the study reported a good experience and had substantial relief of their pre-operative pain.

Hart said the study results might offer guidance to doctors and surgeons in advising potential spine surgery patients about the surgery. For patients at higher risk, the results suggest doctors and surgeons might offer treatment for them prior to surgery, Hart said.

"At the end of the day, I hope this will make changes in the way we prepare people for surgery, to reduce these psychological impacts. This is analogous to how we currently optimize patients' physical condition before major surgery," Hart said.

Hart said he wants to study that issue next -- and measure which pre-surgery interventions might work best to reduce or eliminate any PTSD effects.

Curiosity landed in a crater near Mars' equator on Aug. 5 on a two-year mission to study whether the environment could have been favorable for microbial life. (AP Photo/NASA)

(AP) ? The NASA rover Curiosity has beamed back pictures of bedrock that suggest a fast-moving stream, possibly waist-deep, once flowed on Mars ? a find that the mission's chief scientist called exciting.

There have been previous signs that water existed on the red planet long ago, but the images released Thursday showing pebbles rounded off, likely by water, offered the most convincing evidence so far of an ancient streambed.

There was "a vigorous flow on the surface of Mars," said chief scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology. "We're really excited about this."

The discovery did not come as a complete surprise. NASA decided to plunk Curiosity down inside Gale Crater near the Martian equator because photos from space hinted that the spot possessed a watery past. The six-wheeled rover safely landed Aug. 5 after a nail-biting plunge through the Martian atmosphere. It's on a two-year, $2.5 billion mission to study whether the Martian environment could have been favorable for microbial life.

Present day Mars is a frozen desert with no hint of water on its radiation-scarred surface, but geological studies of rocks by previous missions suggest the planet was warmer and wetter once upon a time.

The latest evidence came from photos that Curiosity took revealing rounded pebbles and gravel ? a sign that the rocks were transported long distances by water and smoothed out.

The size of the rocks ? ranging from a sand grain to a golf ball ? indicates that they could not have been carried by wind, said mission scientist Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz.

Though Curiosity did not use its high-tech instruments to drill into the rocks or analyze their chemical makeup, Grotzinger said scientists were sure that water played a role based on just studying the pictures.

It's unclear how long the water persisted on the surface, but it easily could have lasted "thousands to millions of years," said mission scientist Bill Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley.

Curiosity chanced upon the dried-up streambed while driving to Glenelg, an intriguing spot where three types of terrain meet. Its ultimate destination is Mount Sharp, a mountain rising from the center of crater floor, but it was not expected to travel there until the end of the year.

Finding past water is a first step toward learning whether the environment could have supported microbes. Scientists generally agree that besides water and an energy source such as the sun, organic carbon is a necessary prerequisite for life.

While an ancient streambed holds promise as a potentially habitable environment, scientists don't think it's a good place to preserve the carbon building blocks of life. That's why the rover will continue its trek to the foothills of Mount Sharp where there's a better chance of finding organics.

Scientists convert oceanic microbe data into music

Soft horns and a tinkling piano form the backbone of "Fifty Degrees North, Four Degrees West," a jazz number with two interesting twists: it has no composer and no actual musicians. Unless you count bacteria and other tiny microbes, that is.

The song is the brainchild of Peter Larsen, a biologist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory. Larsen, it turns out, has no musical training at all; his interests run less towards the blues and more towards blue-green algae.

When faced with an avalanche of microbial data collected from samples taken from the western English Channel, Larsen recognized he needed a way to make sense of it all. "Thinking of interesting ways to highlight interactions within data is part of my daily job," he said. "I am always trying to find new ways to visualize those relationships in ways so that someone can make relevant biological conclusions."

In the case of the western English Channel data, however, Larsen decided that a visual representation of the data would not be as effective as one he could hear.

"There are certain parameters like sunlight, temperature or the concentration of phosphorus in the water that give a kind of structure to the data and determine the microbial populations," he said. "This structure provides us with an intuitive way to use music to describe a wide range of natural phenomena."

A colleague of Larsen's suggested that classical music could effectively represent the data, but Larsen wanted any patterns inherent in the information to emerge naturally and not to be imposed from without.

"For something as structured as classical music, there's an insufficient amount of structure that you can infer without having to tweak the result to fit what you perceive it should sound like," Larsen said. "We didn't want to do that."

While this is not the first attempt to "sonify" data, it is one of the more mellifluous examples of the genre. "We were astounded by just how musical it sounded," Larsen said. "A large majority of attempts to converting linear data into sound succeed, but they really don't obey the dictates of music meter, tempo, harmony. To see these things in natural phenomena and to describe them was a wonderful surprise."

According to Larsen, the musicality of the data is not limited to the organisms in the English Channel. In another set of analysis, he and his colleagues used a similar methodology to look at the relationship between a plant and a fungus.

"We expect to see the same intuitive patterns recurring in different environments," he said. "Sometimes, it can sound a little avant-garde, but it's not random because it reflects very real phenomena."
